Hiatus

Hey, guys. This is going to be a short and sweet post.
I am so so sorry for my absence the last weeks. School's been hectic. So much to do! If you've seen my Twitter feed, you know how absent I've been. I can't do anything! I watched Yuri on Ice, and that's the only fall anime I've seen. It's hard to watch anime these days.
So I'm on a hiatus. Until...the next break, probably. Or Winter Break. I'm not sure. I'm so sorry! I'll do blog tour posts, but that's all I can manage. I'm sorry. See you later?

Hope to see you soon,
Wren

Rift Uprising
By Amy S Foster
Science Fiction, Romance, Dystopian
400 pages
Buy: Amazon | B&N

Normal seventeen-year-old girls go to high school, binge watch TV shows all weekend, and flirt with everyone on the face of the Earth. But Ryn Whitaker is trying to save it.

Ryn is a Citadel. A soldier. A liar. Ryn and her fellow Citadels were specially chosen and trained to guard a Rift—one of fourteen unpredictable tears in the fabric of the universe that serve as doorways to alternate Earths. Unbeknownst to her family, Ryn leaves for school each day and then reports for duty as an elite, cybernetically-altered soldier who can run faster, jump farther, and fight better than a Navy SEAL—which comes in handy when she’s not sure if axe-wielding Vikings or any number of other terrified and often dangerous beings come through the Rift. A fine-tuned weapon, Ryn is a picture-perfect Citadel. But that’s all about to change.

When a young man named Ezra is pulled through the Rift, Ryn finds herself immediately drawn to him, despite her training. What starts as a physical attraction quickly grows deeper, and Ezra’s curiosity throws Ryn off balance when he starts questioning the Rifts, the mysterious organization that oversees them, and the Citadels themselves—questions that lead Ryn to wonder if the lies she’s been telling her family are just the surface of a much bigger lie told to her. As Ryn and Ezra desperately try to get to that truth, they discover that each revelation blurs the line between the villains and the heroes even more.

Check out the first chapter of Rift Uprising!

Chapter 1
Command Center, this is Gamma Team in Nest 4, there is no visual. Over. The voice crackles in my earpiece. I tap the small device without thinking. Its not a hardware issue, not with the kind of equipment we use. More than likely its interference. We are the closest team to The Rift. I wait for the other teams to check in, but its protocol at this point. They arent going to see anything before we do. We hear from Lamda, Phi, Rho, and Omega. The reserves are farther back, in the denser part of the forest, waiting in case something really bad comes through, like a column of Karekins. Karekins are the most dangerous enemy we face in The Rift game. They are humanoid, but proportionally much, much bigger--at least eight feet tall. Whenever I see one, I think of the Titans from Greek mythology. Maybe the big shots at ARC thought the same things when they divided us all into groups using the Greek alphabet.
The scientists at The Allied Rift Coalition created sophisticated machines that spike and beep whenever The Rift is about to dump something out.
We dont need them.
Citadels are in tune with the opening. I dont even think its our heightened senses. We just spend so much time around the damn thing that weve grown accustomed to its habits. I am Beta Teams leader. I was surprised at first when I got the rank. I am not the fastest or strongest among us. It didnt take long though, once we were first deployed, before it became obvious that I think quickly on my feet, though. Im a natural tactician and I dont make sentimental decisions. In the beginning of all this, I would never have volunteered for a command. After so much time on active duty, however, its clear the rank is a good fit. The fact that ARC figured out my strengths before I did still pisses me off. Its like swallowing one of those huge horse vitamins without water. The truth that they somehow know me better than I know myself will always burn right in my center.
I try not to think about how or why anymore. Its pointless and distracting, and I need to focus. Im here and in charge, responsible for my team. We are holding our positions. The four of us are crouched behind a large rock that sits just off to the left of The Rift. The rock was strategically placed here so that we can see whats coming out, but they cant see us.

No, we cant actually see through solid rock or anythingthough that would be cool. Instead, the rock has a couple holes bored through, covered and camouflaged on The Rift side with paint and sieved metal. Its kind of like a two way mirror. No one would notice the holes unless they got right up and put their face up to them and at that point, well, more than likely they would have already been neutralized.
I study my three teammates for a moment. They look so bad-ass they could be on the cover of a comic book. Three years ago, Christopher Seelyethe head of ARC--told us we had all been chosen because of our incredible averageness. He got that one wrong by a mile. Maybe it was bad math or maybe its the chip they implanted to give us all these crazy super powers. Either way, we are far from average. Citadels are striking. People look at us and cant look away. We are sleek and dangerously fascinating, like any other large predator, which makes it impossible for any of us to fly under the radar. Am I pretty? No, not conventionally. But, we all have a strange and complicated beauty thats undeniable. We have become used to being watched and stared at. I wonder what our parents think sometimes. Do they notice or are they just used to us? I wouldnt dare ask them, and because of the role I am forced to play at home, they wouldnt expect me to.
I am snapped back into the moment when Boone checks in on the mic, trying to sound all official, Command this is Brony Team, we still dont have a visual. He smirks beside me. I roll my eyes. Always the comedian.
Repeat, Command demands through our earpieces.
This is Team Rainbow Sparkle and we have a negative on a visual, Violet gives Boone a smack and per usual, Henry says nothing at all. Henry has no sense of humor. Hes as immovable as the rock we are crouched behind.
Major Applebaums voice cuts through the static. Cut the shit, Boone. After were done here today you can go home and play with all your little action figurines, but since we know something is about to come through, maybe youd like to focus so that we can save some lives. " Its an inside joke, years old, that Boone never gets tired of. When we first met Applebaum we were so intimidated that it was difficult for most of us to even speak, let alone answer one of the dozens of questions he would scream in our faces during basic training. It was Boone that came up with the idea that his last name sounded like a My Little Pony character. Boone can be a smart ass but he can always diffuse a tense situation. After we started associating Applebaum with a childrens cartoon, the Major seemed far less terrifying.  Ryn? he asked.
Im on it, Sir. I shoot Boone a look. A look that says everything without me having to use any actual words. And then, I feel the hair on my arms begin to stand up. I know that I am the first one to sense that The Rift is about to open. I always am. I think thats another reason they made me Team Leader: I have a hyper sensitivity to it. I hold my hand up and make a fist. Its a gesture that means business and my team knows me well enough to stop the nonsense and follow my lead. I keep my head down and close my eyes. I can feel the tug of The Rifts giant mouth in my belly. I know we wont be sucked in because all the mathematicians have calculated the exact distance where we are safe. Its one of the few things ARC has told us that I believe absolutely, because we havent yet lost a Citadel that way.
But it doesnt mean the pull doesnt bother me every time.
My heart begins to beat a little faster, the adrenaline starts to course through my veins. The Rift's rippling intensify.
"Command, this is Beta Team Leader, we have a visual. Stage 1. Repeat we have a visual Stage 1. Through the rock I can see the shimmering air undulate like a hummingbirds wings and then, from The Rifts center, a purple dot begins to bleed out towards the edges. Thats Stage 2, Command, copy, I say swiftly.
We copy, Team Leader. Hold your position. I grit my teeth. They dont need to tell me what to do. I know exactly what needs to happen next. Im about to put my life on the line and they are safely sitting on their asses a mile away, watching this all on a bunch of camera feeds. I take a breath. Irritation wont help me if things turn ugly. I have to empty myself out of every emotion. I have to become a thing instead of a person if I want to survive the next ten minutes. Its why were called Citadels and not soldiers. Solid, immovable objects, not malleable beings.
Ready to withstand anything.
The purple in The Rift begins to darken until it is pure black. Its not a normal black, but the darkest color my eyes can register. It is the inky night of the universe. I look at my Team. They are ready. Focused. Intense.
Stage 3, Command. Standby. We all wait for the sound. The Rift always opens with a muffled sonic boom. Its not ear piercing. Its not even all that unpleasant. In fact it comes as sort of a relief. No more waiting. No more guessing. Its time.
The booms happens.
It is an echo of a thing, started a million or a billion Earths away from our own Earth. The ground shakes ever so slightly.
Thats it. Stage 4. Weapons ready. I say calmly. I peer through the rock. The view isnt perfect through the tiny holes perforated in the metal on the other side, but its enough. The Rift opens completely and a person comes tumbling out. Just as quickly, The Rift closes again and turns back into the neon green tower of energy that it is. It always closes with far less ceremony than it opensa guest whos over stayed his welcome and hustles to get out of there before things get awkward.
It looks like we have a solo passenger, Command. I repeat, a lone individual, a man or possibly…” I peer through the grate in the rock. Its ten A.M. so hes pretty easy to see from my clumsy vantage point, even though theres fifty feet between us. Hes tall but a bit wiry, a swimmers build. Hes looks pretty young, maybe my age or a bit older. A youth. Not a child though, I add hastily.
Roger that, Team Leader, lets give him The Five. Applebaum says cautiously.
Yes Sir, going silent. I say softly. The Five is what we give every Immigrant--human or otherwise--that comes through The Rift. There are a few species like the Karekins who we simply attack because we know they are a threat and have shown no desire throughout the years to negotiate.
For the rest of what or whomever ends up here, we have a pretty decent method of threat assessment. We watch them for five minutes. It becomes clear almost right away what we are dealing with. They are all afraid. How that fear manifests itself is the key. Some get panicked and desperate. Some cry. Some wail. Some simply sit down and look at The Rift, staring into its sickly green abyss, clearly in shock over what has just happened to them. Some, get very, very, violent.
I breathe out slowly. There is an unlikely chance things turn ugly this morning. This young man is wearing a flannel, jeans, and sporting a backpack that makes him look like hes from a version of Earth very similar to our own. Obviously weve seen more benign-looking beings step through and wreak havoc, but my gut says hes not about to go on a rampage.  And yet Im troubled.
He is also standing just a little too close to The Rift.
Regardless of whether their five minutes are up or not, we cant ever let them go back through. Who knows where they would end up? The chances of making it back to their exact same Earth of origin are almost nonexistent. Anything that has the misfortune of stumbling through becomes our responsibility and we wouldnt want them jumping back in and ending up God knows wherean Earth without an atmosphere? A Karekin Earth? The sharp shooters are ready with a tranq gun up in one of the tree towers, or Nests, just in case.
Hes awfully close, Applebaum says as if reading my mind, but I know hes just looking at one of the video feeds back at Command Center.
Just give him a second, I whisper. The young man cups his hands over his eyes and steps back as if trying to get a better view. Hes taking it in.
He looks around. All he will be able to see is forest. He looks back at The Rift. What the hell? he asks in plain English. He reaches around for his backpack and then stops, bites his lip and slips it over his shoulder once again. Oh my God." His voice is just barely loud enough for me to hear. My hearing is enhanced so he must have almost whispered it. The minutes tick by. He scratches his head and begins to pace. Hes trying to figure it out. Hes trying to analyze. I recognize this approach. Ive seen it in others. There is no real logic to whats happened to him, though. Well there is, in a Ph.D quantum physics type of way, but this guy doesnt look old enough to get that. Besides, even if he could wrap his mind around how this happened, there is no rhyme or reason to why it happened to him. Its moot at this point, though.
The Five are up.

Summer Successes and Slip-Ups: Summer 2016 Anime Recap

Friday, October 14, 2016

As the summer season ends, I have to state my thoughts. This was, after all, the first season I've ever watched all the way through.

I'll be ranking the top three animes as well as giving out other awards and recognitions to the animes I liked the most. This means that, of course, there will be repeats. If you want a quick review of all the animes I've watched this summer, don't forget to check out my mid-seaosn recap. I went over the animes I was watching and the ones I wasn't. I might even write a few short reviews on the animes that impacted me the most this season on a different post. But until then, let's review the season.

Top 3

Mob Psycho 100
Honestly. I am so surprised. This anime was crazy amazing. The animation style stuck out. I haven't seen anything like it before. The main character Mob was so unlike any other main character. He was cute in a quirky way. And he definitely didn't have the charisma of a typical super-superpowered guy. He was humble about it. It was...refreshing. One (The original webcomic's writer) continues to defy the current standards of anime with amazing characters who are kind and caring. He breaks the conventional norms in a way that makes me realize how wrong anime is sometimes. We have bishounen boys, and, while I do love a nice Free-esque, six pack, we take people such as Mob and Saitama for granted. Definitely a 5/5.

Re:Zero
Okay. I admit, I didn't watch this until the summer. It is technically a spring anime that is 20+ episodes long. But I wasn't interested. It seemed like another fish out of water anime. But it isn't. Subaru isn't the most likable character. He goes through an amazing character arc. And it's not just him. Rem is fantastic too. (Ehem...Best Girl in the house.) She's so kind and loving. She cares for Subaru and Ram. Her love is open and vast. I know she'd never let Subaru get hurt. This anime had vivid colors and unforgettable OPs. The story was a little boring in the middle, but the beginning and ending were awe-inspiring. It's a new take on the reincarnation story. (Unlike ERASED and its take with Revival.) I want to see another season of this. After there is more light novel/manga material.

Amanchu
This is another anime that surprised me. It was so moving. I wanted it to be a yuri anime, but, instead, I got a new take on friendship. And I'm not upset by the lack of yuri. Teko and Pikari's story of acceptance and love is just fantastic. The colorful world underwater takes my breath away. And Teko changes too. She starts out demure and shy, but she turns into a mildly confident person. She begins the process of coming out of her shell. I want to see more of her. I want to see her dive with Pikari. But, currently, I know that Teko's starting an amazing, life-changing journey.

Best Story

I can't be the only one who doesn't particularly like episodic animes. Orange is one of the only animes of this season with a non-episodic arc. All the events in this anime are leading up to Kakeru's death, or near-death experience. We know it's going to happen. But the journey between Point A and Point B is what the story is about. We follow a typical high school journey, but there are unexpected bumps. And, truly, as someone who hasn't read the manga, that twist in the middle was not expected.

Best Male Character

Natsuki Subaru: Re:Zero
Subaru, as stated before, has an amazing change. He's snarky at first. Even a little cocky. But he sheds this self-absorbed exterior and lets his inner strength shine. He does care for people. Deeply. And Re:Zero is the story of him realizing how far he'll go for the people he loves.

Kageyama Shigeo: Mob Psycho 100
Kageyama Shigeo or Mob is amazing. He's unassuming. You'd never realized the amazing power within. Honestly, I was surprised how much I liked him. He's so quiet; if I went to his school, I'd never notice him. (I can't say the same for his brother, though.) He is truly kind. I'm happy we have an anime about a different sort of main character, one who isn't in the spotlight often. Because, often, the best heroes are the ones we don't even know about.

Best Female Character

Rem: Re:Zero
Rem is Best Girl. Honestly. She's so sweet and so kind. She seems aloof at first, but then you realize she's just an adorable puff ball of puff and sweetness. With a mace. (Not Mace. But A mace. The medieval weapon.) I would love to meet Rem in real life. She loves so deeply. She fights in Subaru's honor even after being ---------ed. (Fill in your blank. Though, this is a correct answer.)

Naho: Orange
Honestly, I put Naho on this list because she's hesitant. I know that sounds strange, but it's true. She doesn't immediately act when she gets her letter. She doubts it. And that's what would happen in real life. No one would immediately trust a letter from your supposed 'future self'. No one. Her hesitance to react and hesitance to love Kakeru is what truly makes her stand out. She's not a typically, froofy shoujo girl. She's human.

Teko: Amanchu
Teko's character development is what I love about her, much like why I love Subaru. She starts out shy and standoffis (Seeing a trend?) And becomes this beautiful butterfly. (I'm kidding...maybe?) But she's such a sweet character. I love seeing her develop with Pikari. I love seeing her learn more about diving and life and living and fun. She might be mentally in Tokyo at first, but she moves to the ocean. (This is me trying to be funny.)

Best Couple

Rem and Subaru: Re:Zero
Okay. These two aren't really together. But I count them as a couple. Rem loves Subaru unconditionally. Even if he doesn't love her. Subaru's love for Emilia doesn't waver. Ever. It's quite amazing. Rem would do anything for Subaru. And Subaru does know that. He loves Rem for that. Not romantically. But as friends. And that's just...amazing.
Rem x Subaru FOREVER.

Teko and Pikari: Amanchu
Is it weird that I actually thought that Amanchu was a yuri diving anime at first? Because...that's what I wanted. What I got was a complex friendship that definitely surpasses yuri. Their friendship is amazing. I want what Teko and Pikari have. I want it. You never forget a friend like Pikari. Never.

Ko and Rin: New Game
If anything's yuri, it's these two. They work so well together. There was one episode where they were basically playing out. I swear, the studio WANTS us to think they're a couple. Rin cares so much for Ko. And Ko might not see it. (She's kinda...daft in matters of the heart.) But she's loved. It's such a cute relationship. Relationship goals.

Best OP

Amanchu
This is such a peaceful anime. It makes me want to smile whenever I think about it. The OP does reflect that. It's a song that starts out tentative and cautious before diving right in. The animation that goes along with it is just breathtaking. I feel like I'm plunged into the ocean every time.

Mob Psycho 100
1. 2. 3. 4.
The counting part of this OP is a bit confusing to most at first until you realize that the resounding 99 is when Mob is about to explode. Thankfully, we get enough scenes of Mob reaching his breaking point. This song pumps you up. Soon enough, you'll be singing along. Mostly to the counting parts. And the animation is confusing. It's as if you're on an acid trip, but the snapshots of the Body Building Club or Teru or Reigen eating takoyaki all up in the anime. So it's an interesting peek into the going-ons.

KonoBi
Okay. This is my guilty pleasure song. It's so cute and pop-y. I love it. Plus, the animation is pretty amazing. (Except for that one creepy part when we're ogling at the teacher's body. Not that she's not cute or anything. I just...feel awkward. She's a teacher. Geez.) I love the beginning when Usami is running with a paintbrush. Amazing. It really sums up what this anime is about: art and cute middle school kids doing cute things.

Best Art Style

I'll say it once. I'll say it twice. Mob Psycho 100 has a unique animation style ever. It's a different art style. I constantly complained...until I got used to it. It's flashy and constantly moving. It's so unique which makes it memorable. I won't forget Mob's 100% explosions. Or Teru's insane hair. Or...anything about the art.

I love the colors. So much. And the realism. Subaru and Rem look fantastic. Not to forget Emilia or Puck. The entire anime is in this up-and-coming style which is focused on details and colors and just...ahhh. It's so amazing. I love this style. It's so good.

Underappreciated Anime

Morose Mononokean
Okay. Truthfully, I loved watching this anime. It's cute and kinda lackluster, but Ashiya was such an interesting character. I loved how sweet he was, how compassionate. One of the few things I disliked, though, was the lack of character development. Fuzzy was cute and all, but that doesn't overshadow the lack of plot or character development. Cute but not amazing.

What was your favorite anime of the season? Who was your favorite character?

Aesthetic Addict: 'Cinder' by Marissa Meyer

Monday, October 10, 2016

Another month means another Aesthetic Addict!
The theme for the month is retelling.

My book is Cinder by Marissa Meyer!

CinderMarissa Meyer

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And here's my aesthetic post!
Time to explain my choice of pictures.
 This is a picture from the animated movie by Disney. The animated Cinderella. But it's a pretty important scene from the movie. So I decided to add it!
 In the book, Cinder is given a really nice pair of gloves from her prince. So...obviously important.
I know that this foot is creepy. And super realistic. But Cinder is an android. So we need this. And as in Cinderella, Cinder has a foot that doesn't fit. An android foot.
The book is set in futuristic China. So I chose a skyline of present day Shanghai. Which looks pretty fantastic, by the way.
And, last but not least, is a picture of the crystal/glass high heel shoe that Cinderella wears. But, even though, Cinder is an android and doesn't wear shoes like this, but it's important to the original myth.
Fall into Fall Anime 2016
Sunday, October 2, 2016
AH! Fall anime is here. It's crazy how we're switching over to the lovely animes of this fall. I haven't even finished some summer anime ('91 Days', 'Morose Mononokean', 'Orange', and 'Mob Psycho 100', in case you want to know.) But. I'm super excited for this season. Why? You're about to find out.
Definitely Will Watch
Haikyuu Season 3
I'm most excited for Haikyuu Season Three. We're about to see Karasuno and Shiratorizawa. As someone who has read the manga and knows what happens, I'm really in it for the action and the characters and, ultimately, the OPs. Haikyuu has a track record of being a phenomenal anime, and I know that this season will be no different.
Shuumatsu no Izetta
Honestly, I was surprised about this anime. A cute red-head (Who reminds me of Shirayuki from Snow White with the Red Hair) with a frilly, white dress riding on a broomstick/gun (Or I think it's a gun? It looks like a gun to me) fighting bad guys. What should I think? But it seems like an interesting and moving anime. With action.
Occultic;Nine
Okay. This seems a tad like Bungou Stray Dogs to me. But I think I can work with it. If we get a cool paranormal story, I'll be satisfied. (And, yes, that is a Hamilton reference.) I want to see backstories and a fast plot. Like Mob Psycho 100 character-wise and Kill la Kill plot-wise. Not following those characters or plots but the general idea of detailed characters and fast, action-filled plots.
Trickster
I still don't know much about this anime. But the animation is really cool. And the name 'Trickster' evokes this sense of mischief and madness that I really want to explore. But, then again, I don't know much.
Maybe Watch
Bungou Stray Dogs Season 2
I'm not saying that I enjoyed the part one of this anime. But I'm interested in seeing how Dazai fights and reacts to the possible attacks. Also, Dazai.
Nanbaka
This just seems like a mindless anime to watch. Something funny and crazy that will take my mind off of the stressful matters of life. Anyways, it has vibrant colors and some...interesting characters.
WWW.Working!
Honestly, I think I need some slice of anime among all these action and thriller animes. This seems cute (Along the lines of Kono Bijutsubu ni wa Mondai ga aru) and fluffy. That's all I need. And...interesting characters/
Mahou Shoujo Ikusei Keikaku
Okay. I don't mind magical girl animes. I really don't. I'm just scared that this anime will try to be 'Madoka Magica' and will fail epically and disappoint everyone. So I'm unsure on that level.
And there are two or so slice of life animes that I might try. But I haven't even added them to my MAL. So I won't watch them unless everyone sings their praise.
A lot of the animes this season don't seem too great. So I'll be spending time catching up on all the finished I haven't finished. Or even started for that matter. Oh well.
But if any anime turn out to be amazing (Such as 'Amanchu' and 'Re:Zero' from summer and spring seasons respectively), I'll watch it. But it has to be AMAZING.
What anime are you watching this season? Which ones are you cautious about?
